Nestled below the third most visited natural site in the world, Mont Blanc, Chamonix is a bustling, cosmopolitan village. The Golden Age of Mountaineering began in Chamonix, and despite the end of that Age the village of Chamonix remains a vibrant, alpine Mecca. Chamonix is the starting point for the classic high alpine Haute Route. The village is also known as the "Death Sport Capital of the World" because of the plethora of dangerous outdoor activities that the mountains offer.
